Executive Director Position:

The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen is looking for a visionary leader with a successful track record to lead our organization.

The GSMT ED will oversee directors of its three constituents programs and has ultimate authority for their staffs as well), a maintenance staff, and an executive office. The GSMT also rents out space on its top four floors to seven tenants and, consequently, the Executive Director will be a person with strong personal and managerial skills. This complex organization, however, also requires demonstrated experience with budgets and financial oversight.

Most significantly, however, the successful candidate for the GSMT ED position will be entering at an exciting time in the history of the organization. The Society has embarked on a robust effort to build its membership to develop its funding sources. Candidates for ED will have had extensive familiarity with grants in development work in areas central to the institution's mission, notably with arts and cultural foundations, and with the construction industry and building trades.

Finally, the Society's building is in the midst of implementing a climate control grant for the library and envisions extensive renovation in conjunction with upgraded landmark status. Thus, the ED will need be a person with considerable experience in facilities Management."

The Society is a non-profit organization with over 200 years of experience as a fraternal organization which now runs a school, a library, as well as various other cultural programs in the City of New York. These programs contribute to the advancement and development of the trades in the New York region.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Organizational Development
  • Oversee strategic planning
  • Communicate and represent the Society to constituency and the community
  • Evaluate of the organization's effectiveness
Facilities Management
  • Oversee management and maintenance of building
  • Oversee upcoming capital projects
  • Maintain relationship with tenants.
Development
  • Oversee a sustainable, diversified fundraising plan
  • Maintain and build upon current funding sources both public and private
  • Identify and develop new revenue sources including a major donor campaign
  • Develop, support, and coordinate a capital campaign program
Fiscal Management
  • Working with the Board of Governors and the various committees, prepare an annual budget and development plans to meet the financial needs of programs and administrative operations
  • Regularly track the performance against the budget to ensure that the financial goals are achieved, cash flow is maintained, and the financial reserve is built upon
  • Prepare monthly finance reports for the Board of Governors and supervise expenditure reports, and other requested fiscal reports for the Board
  • Supervise finance staff and coordinate the management of financial and administrative procedures to maintain fiscally sound programs and accounting systems
  • Adhere to Generally Accepted Accounting Principals and the Society's Financial Policy
Administration and Personnel Management
  • Provide leadership, direction, and support for the staff/organization
  • Promote an organizational culture/structure that fosters cooperation, communication, teamwork and trust
  • Conduct annual staff performance reviews
Board Support
  • Provide advice, and help facilitate policy development and change, to assist the Board with organizational support and development
  • Maintain standards and structure for appropriate and effective communication between the Board and staff
  • Provide the Board with pertinent and timely information for decision making and organizational evaluation
QUALIFICATIONS:
Successful applicants will have the following qualifications:
  • 5 -10 years of experience with non-profit management
  • An advanced degree is preferred (M.A. or MBA), but a B.S. with complementary experience will be considered
  • Demonstrated organizational leadership and team development skills
  • Successful experience networking and building collaborative partnerships
  • Effective communication and facilitation skills

Ideal candidates will have experience in these additional areas:
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Successful development and financial management experience
  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills as applicable to the overall organization strategy and the fine detail of everyday management
  • Energy, enthusiasm, patience, and a sense of humor
