Tulis,

Sculptor and Designer,

Tuesday, April 3 AT THE GENERAL SOCIETY LIBRARY,

The lecture starts at 6:30 P.M.  – RECEPTION TO FOLLOW.

Abigail Tulis is a sculptor and artist based in New York. Gathering concepts and techniques from her independent studies and travels, she is inspired by classical modes of thought and creates work informed by traditional architecture, Renaissance ideals and medievalism.

Tulis will discuss the common themes that unite her interdisciplinary practice as an artist.

She will begin with a discussion of the particulars of her sculptural training in Tennessee and New York; and how that shaped her early work for architectural spaces. Her talk will include a description of  how she created an award-winning sculptural project for Peter Pennoyer’s Millbrook house. Tulis will also touch on her experiences with creative collaboration.

Her method of gleaning and harvestings let her sketch out a framework for a visual mythology that is utterly distinctive, and marked by a playfulness that includes hairy insect legs, bulging eyes, Dutch townsquares and medieval armor. She will conclude with an overview of the various projects she is currently developing – work that is deeply traditional and easily accessible, presented in an abstracted framework, alongside fostering interdisciplinary collaborations.

Tulis began her career in Tennessee. training as a figurative sculptor at 15, she then moved to New York to study sculpture at the Grand Central Academy and the ICAA. She began her career with designing and executing a sculptural scheme for Millbrook House, which was awarded the Stanford White Award in 2017. Tulis spent some years alternately working as a decorative sculptor and traveling Europe while building a personal visual language.  Currently, Tulis is developing a body of large scale symbolist paintings in her Long Island City studio, while expanding her artistic vocabulary by working as visual creative director for prog pop band Kitten. She exhibits with Paul Calendrillo Gallery in Chelsea , where she recently curated a show.
