THE CLASSICISM BEYOND THE REACH OF STYLE

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2015; 6:30PM RECEPTION, 7:00PM LECTURE

The ICAA is proud to host architect, author, and Professor Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame’s School of Architecture, Carroll William Westfall as he presents the lecture, The Classicism Beyond the Reach of Style.

We are thrilled by the work of the increasing number of skillful classical and traditional architects. They have validated classical architecture as an alternative to Modernism’s reigning styles. But so far, they have understood classicism as a style, which short-changes what traditional and classical architecture and urbanism offer. Beyond style are the benefits we receive when beauty is allied with justice; benefits offered by a more profound understanding of the traditional theories of architecture, These are benefits that the current interpretations of tradition fail to make available. Carroll William Westfall’s presentation will introduce some of these ideas through fresh interpretations of the thoughts on architecture found in Vitruvius, Alberti, Palladio, and Thomas Jefferson. This lecture will feature themes discussed in Westfall’s book, Architecture, Liberty and Civic Order: Architectural Theories from Vitruvius to Jefferson and Beyond.

Carroll William Westfall is an architectural historian and a Professor at the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture in South Bond, Indiana. Westfall earned his BA from the University of California, his MA from the University of Manchester, and his PhD from Columbia University. He joined the department at Notre Dame in 1998 and served as Chairman of the School of Architecture until 2002. Currently Mr. Westfall teaches architectural history and theory to advanced students. Prior to this, Professor Westfall taught at Amherst College, the University of Illinois at Chicago and at the University of Virginia.
