SUMMER 2022 LITERATURE LECTURES

Tuesday, June 28th at 6pm – Before Central Park: A Fascinating Account of the History of Central Park (Online)

Sara Cedar Miller, historian emerita of the Central Park Conservancy, will discuss her new book, Before Central Park, the authoritative account of the place that would become Central Park.

In her talk, Ms. Miller will chronicle two and a half centuries of history, from the first Dutch family to settle on the land through the political crusade to create America’s first major urban park. She will tell the stories of Indigenous hunters, enslaved people and enslavers, American patriots and British loyalists, the Black landowners of Seneca Village, Irish pig farmers, tavern owners, Catholic sisters, Jewish protesters, and more.

• Thursday, November 4, A Booklover’s Guide to New York with author Cleo Le Tan.  

Cleo Le Tan will present her book, A Booklover’s Guide to New York, an illustrated guide to New York City tailored for the book-obsessed explorer showcasing the city’s best bookshops; libraries; homes and haunts of world-famous writers; and scenes from literary classics with charming drawings by the famed New Yorker cover artist Pierre Le-Tan.   This will be both an in-person and virtual event, please click the links to register. The Art of Walking Manhattan Sideways: Hidden Gems on the Side Streets highlight the hidden not-for-profits as well as pay tribute to the arts on the side streets and – celebrates dance, museums, music and theater, while also drawing attention to many more scrumptious restaurants, splendid neighborhood bars, and one-of-a-kind shops.
